ORTHOSTATIC HYPOTENSION

It is condition of a sharp drop in blood pressure upon standing from horizontal in upright position determined by gravity forces and the withdrawal of blood from the head to the extremities due to the physical inability of the heart to compensate the quick hydraulic change of blood flow. Each of you has experienced this effect on himself. Remember! Do not make sudden movements if this is not vitally necessary! In elderly people the effect of orthostatic hypotension is much stronger so when helping an old man to stand up keep in mind that he may be dizzy due to the momentary drop in blood pressure. Hold him tight while he stands securely on his feet and is confident in himself that he is able to begin walking without assistance.
